  7. Background.
  8.  
  9. Stacker works great on an IBM PS/1.  However, there are a few things
  10. you must do before and after installing STACKER on an IBM PS/1.  The
  11. following step-by-step procedure will prepare your PS/1 for Stacker:

  14. Procedure.
  15.  
  16.    1.  Start IBM DOS from the fourth quadrant screen.  Click on "Backup and 
  17.        Restore Your Fixed Disk" and press Enter.  Follow the prompts that 
  18.        you are given to back-up all of the files on your fixed disk.
  19.           
  20.    NOTE:  The number of diskettes will vary depending on the amount of 
  21.           data on your hard drive.
  22.           
  23.    2.  From the fourth quadrant screen, choose "Customize How System Starts."
  24.                      
  25.    3.  The third line from the bottom of the screen says, "Read Config.sys:"  
  26.        Click on "From Disk."
  27.           
  28.    4.  The next line down says, "Read Autoexec.bat:".  Click on "From Disk."
  29.           
  30.    5.  The last line says, "Disk to read from:"  Click on "C:."
  31.           
  32.    6.  Press Enter to save the changes and exit.
  33.           
  34.    7.  Restart your system by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del.
  35.           
  36.    NOTE:  You may get an "Error in CONFIG.SYS" message when the computer 
  37.           boots.  Ignore it.
  38.           
  39.    8.  If you boot into the built-in menu, instead of booting to the DOS 
  40.        prompt, press Shift+F9 to get to the DOS prompt.
  41.           
  42.    9.  You can now install Stacker by inserting the Stacker diskette and 
  43.        typing:  A:INSTALL /B=C   and then pressing the Enter key.
  44.           
  45.    NOTE:     If you have a black and white system, you must also add a /M 
  46.              parameter to the above line before pressing the Enter key.
  47.              For example:  A:INSTALL  /B=C /M
  48.           
  49.    CAUTION:  Do not choose the default of "Reboot to remove resident 
  50.              programs".  This could cause the computer to boot directly 
  51.              into the built-in menu instead of completing the Stacker 
  52.              installation.  All other defaults are fine. At the end of the 
  53.              Stacker installation program, let Stacker reboot to access the 
  54.              Stacker Drive.
  55.           
  56.    10. If you boot into the built-in menu, instead of booting to the DOS 
  57.        prompt, press Shift+F9 to get to the DOS prompt.
  58.           
  59.    11. Insert the Stacker diskette in drive A: and enter the following:
  60.        
  61.        A:SEDIT C:\CONFIG.SYS
  62.           
  63.    12. At the end of the CONFIG.SYS file, add the line: 
  64.   
  65.        INSTALL=D:\SHELLSTB.COM
  66.           
  67.    13. If you have an "INSTALL=D:\SHELLSTB.COM" line before the STACKER device 
  68.        lines, disable it by moving the cursor to the beginning of the line and 
  69.        typing REM followed by a space.
  70.           
  71.    14. Press Ctrl+Z to save the CONFIG.SYS file.
  72.           
  73.    15. Restart you system by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del for the changes to take 
  74.        effect.
  75.           
  76.    16. As your computer restarts, Stacker's SSWAP utility will inform you that 
  77.        the CONFIG.SYS file on your system's boot drive needs to be updated.  
  78.        It will also ask if it is OK to perform the update.  Press F9 and then 
  79.        Enter to allow it to do the update.  Your system will restart one last 
  80.        time and the installation of Stacker will be complete.
